For the past 27 years, I’ve been experimenting with almost every aspect of health and wellness imaginable. I’ve been vegan, vegetarian, and a carnivore. I’ve done countless juice cleanses and fasts. I’ve been fat free, full fat, low carb, high carb, gluten, gluten free, paleo, all organic, consumed unpasteurized, unhomogenized cow and goat milk.. Yes, you read that right, all of it. I have almost tried it all and you’ll hear me talk about food and my many experiments a lot this year, but today i wanted to write about hydration.
There are so many schools of thought on pretty much every topic imaginable and hydration is no different. Does drinking water, or any liquid, while eating slow digestion? The Mayo clinic says no, but I can tell you from years of experience that if you pour water on top of your food and then within 120 minutes or less, turn your body upside down the way we do in so many exercises at Melt, you are going to feel nauseous.
I can also tell you that when I remove all liquids from my meals, my food seems to digest almost instantly. I have gone into the hot room at Melt within 30 minutes of eating a large meal and felt perfect during my session. Other times, I’ve consumed liquid with my meal and an hour and a half later, my food and water is still sloshing around in my belly when I’m trying to enjoy downward facing dog.
If you’re not sure what your body requires or how it will respond, experiment. Try removing liquids and see what happens. Also, remember that greasy food that lacks water content is just naturally going to sit heavy in your stomach. You already know what you should be eating, so just do that and see what happens.
Remember to get in at least 100 oz of pure water a day if you’re going to be sweating. Reserve hydration for in between meals and during your sweat session and you should feel alert and energized all day long.
