Low fat, high fat, high protein, low carb, vegan, vegetarian, paleo, three meals a day, five meals a day, snacks, no snacks, uuggh… it’s all so f$&*@#g confusing.

Food. Without it, we can’t survive. Too much of it or too much of the wrong foods and we don’t thrive.

The challenge with eating food to truly nourish and fuel our bodies, is that we also use food to fuel our emotions. We use it as a drug and like a drug, food can be addicting and have a real hold on us. Food shoots endorphins through our bodies, numbs pain, distracts us, provides a feeling of euphoria. When we eat for emotional reasons, that feeling is temporary and typically ends with a vicious cycle of self-disgust causing us to make shitty food choices, feel disgusting and eat more disgusting food to numb the pain, provide temporary euphoria, etc.- and this continues on and on and on. This is where we get ourselves into trouble.

Food is meant to taste amazing and it’s such a true joy in our lives. Eating foods from the earth to nourish our bodies and thoroughly enjoy is exactly what was intended for us. When we use food to medicate, drown or otherwise fill an emotional void, it becomes the enemy. It becomes that thing that consumes our every thought; that thing that is keeping us from being the best version of ourselves.

When we eat light and bright, we feel light and bright. When we eat heavy, we feel heavy and disgusted with ourselves because we know that particular food isn’t serving us. It’s not contributing to our health or well-being, it’s actually destroying our chances of reaching our goals and finding optimal health.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. We all know we’re supposed to eat from the earth. We all know that vegetables are king. We know our muscles need lean protein. We know that fruit tastes amazing and is nature’s candy, but unlike candy, is full of antioxidants and goodness, but is also high in calories, so it should be second to a large variety of fresh vegetables. We know that eating is for fueling our bodies, so we should eat, move, eat, move, eat, move, sleep. Repeat.

Food demands respect and appreciation.
